Six Decades of Giving

Dr. Peter and Karen FradeFor the past six decades, Dr. Peter and Karen Frade have dedicated themselves to teaching and learning at Wayne State. Karen’s journey includes two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree, a nursing career at Henry Ford Hospital and a position as assistant director of the Office of Teaching and Learning. Peter’s includes a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, a Ph.D., and a position as associate dean for health sciences in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Their life together even began at Wayne State, after they met at Henry Ford Hospital.

Throughout their distinguished careers, the Frades always made a point to give. Recently, they made two bequests—or gifts in their estate plan—to benefit the university. Recalling the full-tuition scholarship Karen received when completing her own bachelor’s in nursing, the Frades decided to create a scholarship for nursing students with financial needs. Additionally, they created an endowed scholarship for students in the Eugene Applebaum College who aim to become health science professionals in Pathologists’ Assistant.

For the Frades, planned giving made sense. “An estate plan has the greatest amount of long-lasting, sustainable impact,” Peter says. Karen notes how easy the process was, adding, “It’s “such a relief to know that everything’s set up.”

At the end of the day, “there is no greater thing we can do as humans than give to others,” Peter concludes.
